So called 'honour' based abuse (HBA) encompasses incidents or crimes which have been committed to protect or defend the honour of the family and/or community. This includes female genital mutilation (FGM), child marriage and practices such as breast ironing, virginity testing and honour-based abuse within the LGBT+ community.

All forms of HBA are abuse, regardless of the motivation, and should be acted upon following your settings child protection reporting procedures.

Since 31st October 2015, if you're a regulated teacher or working in teaching work, it is your legal duty to report known cases of FGM in under 18s to the police.

On the 27th February 2023 The Marriage and Civil Partnership (Minimum Age) Act 2022 came into force in England and Wales.

This 1 hour course considers the latest guidance and how HBA within society can be hidden. All learning styles are engaged through embedded videos and scenario-based workshops that promote interaction and discussion, to provide learners with the confidence to support the children in their care and contribute effectively to creating a safe and effective whole school safeguarding culture.

Content

  • Recognise the signs and indicators relating to pupils at risk of HBA

  • Consider the barriers to disclosure, triggering behaviours and disguised compliance

  • Understand the updated responsibilities and reporting duties of child marriage and FGM

  • Increase understanding of FGM, breast ironing and virginity testing, and the emerging research into the HBA subjected to children identifying, or perceived to identify, with the LGBT+ community and the actions that may be taken by family or community in response.

  • Raise awareness of which organisations are available for support and offer advice for both victims and safeguarding practitioners.
